This post contains my process and information on the post production side of work. It clearly demonstrates and shows all segments and parts throughout my journey into creating the trailers that went alongside the actual film. I go over my editing process and how it changed throughout each draft as well as what changed. It clearly also demonstrates my knowledge and creative mindset through proplems i encountered with editing. I also show the steps it took to get to the perfect trailer i was happy with for my film.
My process into creating draft 1 (Trailer) -
Firstly I started by opening premier pro again to edit the trailers and wanted to start off with a foundation to get some feedback so i could go up from there and improve and add any suggested feedback. The first thing i did was go back into my USB file to go in my folder i created before for the horror film clips and dragged all of them into the premier project panel box. I wanted to get all of the clips because in doing so I could choose what clips and what works best so having all of the options was the better and fitting choice.
After that I sorted through all of the clips and dragged a good bunch I thought were fitting for my film trailer. I dragged in 10 or so clips to mess and fit around after playing around with the clips and with spacing and where each should go I landed on a rough layout of my clips. When filming I had a clip which we filmed and I didnt use because It felt off putting and too slow but I managed to fit the clip In after all. The clip That was filmed was a scene of corey cleaning the knife whilst looking at the camera. The clip fit more into the trailer more than the actual film the scene worked more for a cinamatic type trailer so Im glad I managed to find a place for that clip.
After this I rendered the footage quickly to make sure that I got everything sorted when watching it back. I wanted it to be a short trailer because the film is a short film so I didnt want to go over that initial run time of course. Once getting all the clips i liked for the trailer I began to make it look less choppy and proffesional I started by adding some defaul transitions this would help the trailer seem more drawn out and cinamatic which is what i want and is hoping for this specific product.
This is what an example of the transition's I added these were cross dissolves. I added these to the start and end of the clips I like fading into the film and out it feels more proffesional. The transition I used was ''cross dissolve''. The transition I used fitted perfectly for this draft of the trailer as well I used this for my film so it matched within the sequence of eachother. As you can see there is a gap betweeen the last clip the reason why that is because the type of clip it was. Its more of a cliffhanger clip and leaving at the end fitted perfectly for the film. I needed to leave a gap becasue when editing i noticed a issue when adding a cross dissolve transition these made the clips almost blend into eachother when transition and it looks horrible so i wanted to leave just enough room to avoid that. Moving the clip slightly along the timeline fixed that issue and overall helped the trailer in terms of quality and assurance.
After doing this I wanted to do one final render in the image above this one you can see timeline has some yellow amongst it. Which means some of the frames arent in sync. To avoid this I just re rendered the footage in the timeline box. You can do this by using the ''mark in'' and ''mark out'' tool this lets you mark wherever you want on the timline this avoids you rendering the whole timeline and saves you time as a whole. Which in turn helped me a lot over the editing process. After that I went into file and looked for the export option and began that step of the final proccess for the draft one.
This was the final step of my draft one I began like all of my other editing journey's by making sure the settings were right. First of all I checked the format and preset were h.164 and 1080p quality these just means when the video is finished everythhing will be good quality and wont need any changes. Once the settings were locked in I changed the location it was going to export in I added to the folder with my previous film drafts. In this folder I also changed the name of the video. I changed it to ''Draft 1 (Shriek!) (Trailer).mp4 this helped me when getting the draft ready for youtube i know which one it is and dont need to be messing around looking around for the draft and wasting time.
With this my draft 1 was complete. With this im going to upload it youtube and conduct a google forms quiz with all the neccessary and proffesional questions for people to answer. The feedback I get im going to add all of the suggestions in to my eventual draft 2 and go from there.
Shriek! (draft 1) (Trailer) -
Feedback for Shriek! (draft 1) (Trailer) -
I created the survey using google forms. This site is excellent for getting feedback or creating custom surveys. The site is a great option for people who want create proffesional and neat looking surveys for business or careers. I asked 3 main questions and these questions would carrry my drive and ambition into my second draft. Im hoping for great feedback that i can use for draft 2 and improve it drastically.
These three questions would give me a basis of what was the quality of my trailer and where i could take the trailer after getting the feedback. The first question gave me a small regen of where people rate the film. This helps me understand what people think of it. The last two are more important and give me detailed answers for me to apply to my second draft.
In the feedback for the opinion question people rated from 2, 3, 4, 4.5 and 5 some people agreed with other;s and selected the same question but what i can take from this form question is that people aren't a fan of this draft because of its quality all of people opinions are less than 5 which isnt good at all. People voting for 2 and 3 means its pretty terrible and bare. This is a good thing in a sense because I can greatly improve it now. The second question I asked if people think the trailer is postive or negative. Most people agreed with the majority that the film is negative. Alot of the feedback was the same or linked for instance some said ''add credits or improve editing'' or ''get some music it feels lack luster without it'' people werent happy with this draft. Odd few said that the product is postive and said its a good foundation to start or build upon. Overall all of the people who voted postive or negative were in agreement that the trailer needs alot more attention and more to it. The third and final question I asked for some suggestions to put in my draft 2 and people suggested things like credits, music. transitions and an intro all of these are more than possible to fit into my second draft. I wanted to make sure that the clips and the foundation of the first draft was ok and see what peoples proplems were. If people said the clips are bad and its not good then I have to start again. However if people suggest new and nice additions to draft 1 I can build from that. Which is what i'm going to do. All of these suggestions and comments will be fitted or intregrated in some way shape or form Into Shriek! trailer (draft 2). My proccess into creating Shriek! (Draft 2) (Trailer) -
Well since my first draft for the trailer already had the foundations of editing I simply re opened the premier file and this means I didnt need to re edit the whole thing again. Once opening I began to implement the suggested feedback given in my first draft survey.
Firstly I started by going on to youtube I thought it would be good if I used a music I was familiar with I wanted to get music that I knew when editing my film i came across this video highlighting and showing 1 hour of dark piano music which was perfect for my film because it has multiple tracks that could offer differant tones for my film/trailer and there was tons of options I could use. I used a track called ''greed'' a slow but powerful track that can fit my film perfectly. After listening to that specific track and liking it the most I went on to dowload the video so I could sample the music for the upcoming draft/drafts.
This was the site I used to dowload the video. It has many options for dowloading youtube video's such as mp3. audio, video and more. Since I wanted the audio I didnt need to waste space on my computer on the video side of things. So I selected the audio option and dowloaded the video in the highest quality there was. After 5 mins or so it was dowloaded and dragged it in to my ''horror clips'' folder which where all of my previous work for the trailers/films. The next step was a bit gruling and time consuming I had to guess where the track was a little and find it after looking for about 10 minutes I found it and marked the start and the end. This helped me get the most out of the track and making sure no other track has little entry way in. I cut the selected area out and kept that. In case anything wrong I decided to drag the cut audio track back into the project panel box making sure I always have the specific audio track I need.
After I wanted to make sure the music wasnt too loud some of the complaints in my film was that the audio was a bit overbearing so I wanted to correct and make it was okay. I played around with the audio level gain I landed on on +7 after a while when I added the music in it was quite so I wanted it to feel louder than usual since its the most prominent thing in the trailer as it stands. After that I wanted to get some credits rolling because the suggestions were saying I should be adding them in the trailer as well. So starting with the opening I simply Used the ''text box'' tool which was something I was still fresh with but was a fine addition with credits. I had a major issue with my premiere pro it wasnt showing up with credits which was a massive thing I needed for the trailer. I tried resetting the program, deleting some things, opening a new file, clicking on graphics. nothing was working it allowed me to install credits but any credits I could find online wasnt compatible so I had to work around that. Which I did as said before I was using the text tool to create the credits I made it look as proffesional as possible with the next step.
After selecting the area I wanted I typed out the words ''Shriek!'' which was the title of my film so I wanted that for my trailer in the intro. After I played around in the left hand side in the panel ''effect controls'' this allowed me to click on the text box and adapt and add all sort of changes. The first thing I did was change the font to a more fitting and bolder one. This was called Palatino Linotype a more proffesional and boxy font. I thought this would be a good fit for my trailer after all. After that I wanted to use the shadow box and clicked on that to give it some depth after that I wanted almost a 3d effect for my credits so I did this by clicking on the meter in the top right which almost shaded and edged the lettering which gave the credits a really cool look. I decided to do this for the intro and the outro i thought it would be good if it matched within both.
After that I made the outro credits the same but the same proplem applied to this side of things since i coudnt accsess the graphics tab I decided to solve and work around that the best i could do. So exactly the same process I started to type on premier pro a text box and fill out the information i needed. Which was director, producer actors and more filling out all of it needed to not just look like a text box so I wanted to compansate that which I did I played around with size font layout and positioning I even looked into my film credits and tried to get on the same page or something very similiar I want my products to almost linked together even if proplems arose.
.
With the credits I wanted to make the them bold and visible and what was important since they didnt really move I needed to put them perfectly onto the timeline (image above) the right credits has a gap this is because when in premier i was experimenting with the duration and found that the credits seem dull and clash with the end clip and that wasnt looking good so I decided to leave a small gap between the credits and final clip this gave the overall trailer a longer duration but better quality control throughout. Since this was my draft two I wanted the upgrade to be good and well done. This was because when getting the feedback these little errors i could potentially leave out will only come back up again so its better to sort them whilst i have the chance in premier pro.
After sorting the credits and getting them looking the best they could I wanted to make sure there wasnt any frame rate proplems so I decided to render the footage for draft 2 as well. This makes sure the video is up to par and smooth throughout. Once rendering which took about 10 mins I went into ''file'' and found the export option this allows me to make the video one full file and ready to be uploaded to youtube.
I had to make sure the setting were right in the export section because the wrong small choice can ruin the video and make it differant from draft 1 and that is something that I dont want. So I made sure the format was h.164 and the format was 'High quality 1080p HD'' this allowed the footage to finish in a higher quality than normally selected which will be good for the feedback meaning the trailer will recieve better feedback in doing so as well. After exporting I opened youtube and uploaded Draft 2 in my studio. With this draft 2 I will be getting feedback on the video to see what could possibly be improved even further or if the video as it stands it good enough for future assessments.
Shriek! (Draft 2) (Trailer) -
Feedback for Shriek! (draft 2) (Trailer) -
I asked 3 main questions and these questions would carry my drive and ambition into my second draft. Im hoping for great feedback that i can use for draft 3 and improve it drastically. With this I will assess the feedback and go back into premiere pro and work on (draft 3) and add all of the recommended suggestions.
These 3 questions allowed my basis to improve further. The first question I asked was to rate my trailer and see if it had improved from the first draft. The first question I asked was once again for people to rate this draft this helps me see if there has been any improvement's at all in terms of likeability or quality. People voted much higher than last time the mode was around 6,7 this is much better than last time because the last survey I took for draft 1 I was getting people answering 3 to 4 to 5 and that wasn't what I was looking for so getting the feedback for the second draft and seeing this is a massive improvement definitely and tells me that my draft progress is going good and I'm on the right track to getting the best possible trailer for my film. The second question I asked was the same question I asked in the last google form as well. which was asking if my product is positive or negative The most common censis was that the product was more positive this time around than the last time draft people and peers where agreeing that the product is positive because of the improvement's/upgrades I made to it. Which is w hat I wanted to hear because it shows that I'm on the right track to a better product overall. The final question I asked was was any final suggestions for the trailer some said that the trailer was fine as it is and the improvement's were good and final enough but however some also disagreed with that and said I should experiment with some overlays or effects. As well as change the music since its the same as the film and new music could offer more variety for the trailer and make it more separate and unique since the lack of clips and feel. I agree with the people suggesting more improvement's to the film. I think the credits are pretty bland without some type of effect in the background since they cant move they don't feel as grand as they normally would do. Since I have problems with my editing software I'll work around and make up and experiment with some overlays I know and would think nice. I will experiment with music as well but my main priority for now is the overlays and effects since that will enhance the trailer in a big way and want to put my full undivided attention in to that.
With these comments and suggestions I will take into account what everyone said/suggested and will improve the recommendations given and add them into my third and final draft for the trailer.
My process into creating Shriek! (Draft 3) (Trailer) -
This was one of two overlays I dowloaded I decided to look at them before adding them. This and the other overlay I experimented with was in my teams folder. one of my lecturers a while ago told us about overlays and what they could do for film as a whole. So with that I remembered where they would be and after getting the feedback I instanltly headed to that specific folder and loaded all three. The third one was a montage of overlays but there more artsy and more specific to certain films. I found that they weren't ''horror'' like for me and the trailer but the other two reminded me of a potential horror movie opening or ending. So I went with those. The overlays I chose was a scratched video recording which was neat for the trailer. I used that for opening. For the outro I put over a fog rising to the screen to give it that slow but eery feel.
As you can see I decided to add the starting overlays as well as the clips I used previously I decided to start my editing journey fresh for the final third draft because I wanted to truly put my care and attention into this and starting fresh made it so much easier to manage areas of improvment. The starting overlay was a bit long for the trailer and outshined the main part. So I shortened it and added the clips after in a row keeping the same clips arranged like the previous two main drafts.
For this one I thought maybe I could dowload the credits or maybe install some graphics, now my knowledge on adding credits was not something I was use to so I tried to get some starting credits and add them into the premier pro file. It didnt really work out sadly the credits looked great but dowloading them didnt do much. They didnt move they woudnt allow me to change the text at all. Not much I could do with those credits so sadly I abandonded that ideas quickly. With my third draft I want something that can actually work and look good at the same time. Even though there are nice looking credits I chose continuinity and safety for the third draft over risking credits Im not sure how to use. I was willing to test this out because I was curious whilst doing the other drafts if it it would work. With starting fresh I thought that might be a good opportunity to try and see if it could work. However its not all bad because the overlays will massively help the credits stand apart from the previous second draft.
After failing with the credits I went back to work on the main part of the video/trailer I wanted to add some transitions to make it feel larger than it actually is. This also helped the trailer feel more cinamatic and drawn out. I decided to add the 3 main sets for the audio and video which was at the start of the footage as well as the end of the footage. In the image there is transitions or '' Cross dissolve at the second clip this is becasuse the way the second clip is framed and placed. It looked too slow or bland. By adding that third transition where i woudnt normally do it it managed to fix and enhance that issue the right way. It looked better and overall made the trailer feel more final than it ever has.
In this screenshot I went onto the first set of overlays. I started with the intro because it feel's easier to manage and a good place to start. With that blank VHS tape overlay I thought giving it space between the clips allowed me to know what the gap and how large it should be. I also knew when doing the credits like before since it was just text on a screen The overlays would need to be mainly where the credits were or going to be. That is what the overlays I chose did. They enhanced the credits and made it feel better and not as bleak as like in the other drafts they feel deflated and pointless. After I dragged a text box onto the opening overlay and began typing the title of the film which was of couse ''Shriek!'' it needed to be there for two reasons continuity for the other drafts and introduction.
After that I went onto the effect controls tab and messed around (proffesionally) with the credit/text since the credits per say werent actually credits I needed to make them better then just a plain white text I started with the font and landed on ''Myanmar Text'' the font overall was simple but just looked a bit neater than the overall generic font. I did play around with other fonts but wasn't pleased with how boxy and was too much. After That I went onto the specifc text and highlighted that whole area. This allowed me to mess with the text even further to give it some effects that I cant normally do or find. I wanted to give the text some shadows and fill it in a bit. With this it almost had its own background which looked great against the VHS tape overlay. I did try the other overlay for the intro as well but ended up not liking it because of the duration and speed of the fog. I could change it but it doesn't look good then sadly. So the other overlay worked better for the intro and the edited title sequence.
In this i also decided to try something that I normally don't do. Since I can most of the time access's the graphics/credits I don't feel the need to mess with the font too much since it comes pre installed with some effects and font. Most of the time they do look nice and works great for my products. But since I couldn't access them I decided to experiment even further then I normally do I started with the bottom right angle that almost looks like its coming out and moving. I played around the meter a little and made the credits look a bit 3D and looked like it was edging against the letters or copying like a phantom letters. I really enjoyed the look of it since It was fresh and unique for the trailer. I also played around with how bold I want the text to be and decided on only a little because it already has a lot going on for an outro and didnt want to overload it. After that I moved the text a little to the right and down since it was a off center just a tad. Nothing that would destroy the trailer. However since this would be the final draft I want the trailer to be the best it possibly can be.
After that I went back to work on the timeline a bit with a such a short duration for the trailer. I needed to make sure that the trailer quality itself was good without it in my opinion it feels rushed and not thought about it. I noticed an issue with the transition towards the end it was overlapping with the other credits sadly It went too quick and looked like it was blipping. I played around with the duration and position and found that when I added another clip to it it fixed the issue. Im not sure why I think it made it overlapped into the second clip but ended up looking good in my eyes so I was happy for two reasons. One my timeline issue is fixed and look professional and two the trailer has a extended length now which is great because adding duration is something I struggled with this trailer I always tried and wanted to choose quality over quantity. This specific section helps me assure that I'm going in the right direction.
After that I wanted to improve the transition slightly because it was good and neat. I just though a few key frames were off. The way I normally test frames and where to place markers or transitions is by moving the arrow keys that allows the product to move a frame per second or by zooming in on the timeline so I can get a proper look at the area I need to analyze. I did a combination of both trying to widen the timeline and moving frame by frame and that allowed me to see what the issue was up close. The issue was the the frames was too close together so the transitions may not look like there are touching but its essentially conjoined. I don't like that at all so I began moving my cursor along the ''cross dissolve'' effect and moving left to shorten the duration slightly of the video. You can also do this to the audio but I found that the audio wasn't as noticeable or distracting as the video section so that didn't really change much. I shortened both lengths slightly and it made the video longer whilst the transitions perfect.
Finally being done with most of the clips on the timeline and sorting that out. I happily moved onto the credits and final overlay section. Firstly I started with the overlay I thought it would be easier to manage and get out of the way. I dragged it in from the project panel box and highlighted this allowed me to edit it any way I see fit. The main issue, which was a simple one. was the it wasn't as big as I would hope it was smaller. Thankfully this was an easy fix compared to my other issues in this project. I began to play around with ''scale'' which allows you to zoom out or zoom in any clip you see fit. Since this was quite zoomed out I started by bringing it closer to the screen. After a couple of seconds I lined it up to the black lines and made it fit to the whole area.
Moving on to the outro credits I tried to make them similar and like examples of credits in film. I did struggle with positioning and spacing and sizing. It was a choice between making them bigger and less on the credits or having a lot on the credits and making them smaller. Ultimately i went with bigger for two reasons one I wanted them to be seen and highlighted well. Second I thought since its a trailer/teaser for the film I didn't need all the credits unlike in my film where I have production set designer executive roles and more with these credits it allows the trailer to stand on its own but not overlap the actual film. I started by typing some of the credits I would like which was director, producer and starring and added all of my friends/peer's in the film. This was something that I wanted the trailer to have to show who is going to be in the movie.
After typing out the specific final credits I did the same thing as for the opening. Which was to experiment with the effect control's. I matched the font with the previous opening credits as well since they are both in the same draft I wanted it to match and make the final version better than previous drafts. I also changed the setting for the right angle tool as well which almost adds like a 3D definition to it which is a nice way of making the credits stand out more. Again it was quite an easy process since I was essentially repeating the steps but on a grander scale. I matched settings for the shadow and fill options as well. The smallest issue can just bring down the quality of the whole draft.
After sorting the credits out for the outro I dragged the specific credits onto the outro overlay which was the fog effect one. After I zoomed in on the timeline and made sure it was connected and looking good. This was a massive important step because I wanted my credits to feel final and fitting not rushed or misplaced. Zooming in I found that the duration was a little short and didnt feel like eased in. So firstly I dragged the purple box along slightly just to increase the duration a little this was good because this allows the credits to stay on the video/overlay for longer. As well as as adding some cross dissolve transitions to the credit section as well this just allowed to flow better and be in sequence with the overlay.
After that I noticed the credits was a little off center when matching and putting it on the overlay. So to fix that I went into effect controls once again and changed the scale and positioning It was only a slight change from right to left but it made all the difference in development and overall final product.
This was the final check before rendering the footage. I wanted to make sure everything looked good on the timeline and as well in the actual video box. I checked the frame issue and positioning of the credits as well as the transitions' all of these small changed made the trailer way more than I expected it do. After doing this I added some sample music that I used before I wanted to make sure this draft was okay before experimenting with new music. I chose the same track as before just to not over complicate the process even further. If the music still doesn't bode well with the trailer I will add a new track into the trailer and as well any other suggested feedback in the final product blog post.
After checking everything was ready for the final steps. I began to mark in and mark out this allowed me to mark a certain part of the timeline instead of the whole timeline. It sped up the process by a lot. After I went into sequence and selected ''rendered in to out'' this allowed me to render the footage making the video all locked in and smooth. If I didn't render it would be choppy and the frames would suffer because of it. So rendering makes the video feel more complete and overall improves the quality of the video by a lot.
Finally the final step was to export the video and upload it. I started by making sure the video was okay and ready to export so once the video was rendered which took about 10 minutes or so. I watched the third draft over one final time before exporting and everything looked good in my eyes. After I went onto file and export then made sure the format and pre-set was like the other previous drafts. Which was H.164 and 1080P High quality. This allows the video just to feel a bit more premium than if I just selected the general options. After waiting for the video to finish exporting I uploaded it YouTube.
Shriek! (Draft 3) (Trailer) -
This is is the final version it will be be the final product per say I am overall very happy with it and the progress its took. With it being the final version for my post production It will only need some small and finite changes. It shouldn't take too long of course but the necessary feedback will go into a compact finished product and will be in the blog post final product and feedback.
Conclusion -
Overall the creative process was something that I enjoyed and was thrown back into. The trailer was different enough from the film to stand on its own. I did have some issues with uploading and premier itself but there wasn't anything I could get around or solve. My biggest issue was the credits and graphics not working properly. But I managed to work around that issue decently well and made the credits look good enough. As well I have experimented with overlays and implementing them for specifically the trailer. It has been a bit of a tall order to get all the editing done and drafts but being done and doing this process again draft by draft I'm happy with the the overall product/trailer. Now I'm going to be working on the my movie posters.
My process into creating the posters -
My process into creating poster 1 -
Firstly I started by selecting and picking out the best few of the bunch I wanted my posters to have variety so I didn't pick the same photos or slightly different I thought it would be good if each have different positions and background's so that's what I looked for. I picked out a good handful of the good bunch I had the reason I only chose 5 because I'm going to be doing journals and updated on the post production process on each poster. So doing over 40 isn't possible sadly that's why I'm going to make these specific posters the best they can.
Firstly I opened photoshop and went into files and selected one the few posters I chose to do and liked. Once getting the one I wanted to start on I added into photoshop and began working and making it a an official teaser poster.
I did notice as going through the photos and deciding the good few to work on that my photos are more zoomed in and not capturing a lot of other areas of my film. So I am going to make all of my posters teaser posters to make them work more for me and the audience. I will experiment with the odd few and see what fits into each and work around problems if needed.
Moving on i began to edit the photos in photoshop Looking at this specific poster, the one i was working on, I looked at the colour and everything around it I loved the simplicity and how the poster turned out but I think its a little bright and doesn't work for ''horror'' poster so I began going into the right hand corner to add and change the look of the poster drastically. I made the poster visually a lot darker and seem more fitting to the overall project and film itself.
This was the tab I used to edit and change the posters drastically for this poster I used colour balance, brightness, contrast, exposure, hue, saturation and vibrance all of these helped me massively to adjust and overall build the poster in a better stance. Even the smallest changed from the these setting made the poster darker and gloomier which is what I wanted overall.
After sorting out the colour and darkness overall for the poster I went back to the start and starting experimenting with the title and which font I want to use and why. I started with this font and I liked it a lot but it felt a bit forced with the colour and the sharp look to it. I liked it a lot but knew it could have been ten times better.
After not liking that font I found this one I really liked it was a bit more subtle with the whole sharpness but still had a prominent distinction between the other one I also messed around with the opacity on this I thought since the poster is darker the title should match it to a degree. So I turned the opacity on the ''Shriek!'' title to about 78 that helped it to be still visible and look good and match with the poster. I was pretty set on this font and ready to move on to the next stage after finding one I liked.
This was something I tried experiment with but ultimately didn't like it I thought by arcing the title it could look more eery and finished but just looks a bit silly and felt like it was being stretched. I liked the initial thought and maybe this could work with my other posters but sadly for this one my ordinal start was a lot better so I stuck with that. The arc is a unique tool and can be used well. However for this specific poster it's best not to go too far and keep it simple and high quality.
After that looking on what next to add to the poster I wanted the title to be at the bottom I liked it at the top but for this poster It looked much cleaner on the bottom so I moved back down to the bottom and decided to change the colour to a bright red I thought that looked really good and liked the bright red against the dull colours in the back. Overall I was happy with these remark and ready to add the other elements to the poster.
After that stage of the development I moved onto what I thought would be a good addition/part in the poster I liked the idea of a coming soon in bold and almost the same size I didn't have much room to put since there was only the top and bottom for spaces fonts and such. I did do it in red as well but I thought it looked weird and too much so I kept it white I liked it a lot more contrasting against the red. I think it can still be better though.
After that I added my logo into photoshop and began re size and place it the bottom right hand corner. I wanted my poster to have my logo because it means I can claim and show off this work in a better and professional manner. Adding my logo was a bit more difficult than I thought because since the background is white I had a difficult time choosing the right opacity to go with. I went back and fourth between lighter and more visible but I remembered the poster is the main event not the logo so with that thought I intentionally made it lighter than I normally would have.
After I thought hey why not experiment more and mess with the title. I was incredibly picky during this process since this was my first poster I wanted to lay the groundworks of the fonts and such. It needed to perfect so I kept messing around and playing around with what I thought looked good. The reason is because I want and need all my posters to have similar fonts and colours otherwise it would look like a proper mess. Traditionally teaser posters have matching fonts and types within each poster for that movie/film.
As well as you can see that I got rid of my coming soon font because I thought it might looked cleaner I Wasn't sure about this decision as going forward but for now I thought it would help me decide how to sort and carry this poster forward. Also experimented with a new font as well I loved this font a lot more than the other two it's exactly what I wanted and it's simplicity really helps me going forward and I'm going to keep this font for all of the upcoming posters and the further development of this poster as well.
I also as you can see changed the opacity and fitted into the bottom right corner like I said I would because I don't want the logo to distract or takeaway from the main poster just for it to be noticeable and eye catching to the audience at hand.
After messing around with fonts and removing the coming soon font as well I just didn't like what I was doing I sat down after taking a break because I was stressing myself out over the perfection of the poster and realized the red and white off and on colour font I did or tried just looked horrible. I didn't like it all and thought it might have looked good but now realize sometime simple is better and that's what works incredibly well for this specific poster I also added in the coming soon font back again. I liked it a lot and added it back in I thought for this poster the coming soon made it feel more unique and finished and I didn't want to take that away.
Finally I also changed the saturation and brightness one final time I liked what I did before but as I was making and doing the process I realize the poster is still bright and looking not much like a horror movie poster. So I made it a lot darker and I'm glad I did because it made the title font pop that much more! and made the logo slightly smaller and more clearer I think it was pretty big and more of a distraction and felt off. Now that I feel confident with this poster I am going to leave this one as it is. I prefer the simple look over the overbearing of adding stuff that doesn't work at all.
After that I needed to export as a PNG because that allows all my work to confide and be in one completed file and this helps it become a proper image/poster. After that I moved onto my second teaser poster.
My process into creating poster 2 -
Like before I started with dragging the image in to photoshop and began to work on what I think is the easiest but most important step which is colour correction. With this poster I think its more brighter than the other one which more tricky because taking away all of its colour means it'll become black and white and I still want colour to come through nonetheless I started by adjusting photo with colour, hue, brightness and more I made it look much darker than originally intended to match with the other poster and the overall horror them I am going for. Once that was done I basically followed the same process as last time implementing the same features in the previous poster.
Since this poster also didn't have much room like the previous poster I made sure to use the space I had wisely which was the top and bottom not much else I liked the leave coming out of the mask so I did not want to take away from that with this poster I decided to make it another version of poster 1 because its similar but has a nice look and deserves that simple and not crammed look I was trying to do. Overall I love the look of this poster it reminds me of some of the Imax posters I've seen and I think choosing to use the same style as the last was more than fine and worked great.
I also will be using the same title for every poster to show a link between them all and not make it seem like each poster is just crammed different stuff in each which Isn't what I want at all.
This poster was similar and didn't take too long to do because of two reasons I finally sorted and came to decision what I want in all of my posters and what style I'm going for that was the tricky part knowing and choosing something that can work for all of the different images I took. Also because this was almost a version 2 of the last poster since it was using the same font and style just a different image as the background. I think both work great and don't break or look cheap from one another. With this came the step like the last which was to export the photo as PNG and save in my file to be assessed later.
My process into creating poster 3 -
Moving on to a new poster I wanted this one to be slightly different from the other two to show difference and experimentation. But I started this poster like the rest which was to edit the colour grading and adjust slightly I noticed it was more brighter at the top then at the bottom that's why I am going to be putting the title and coming soon section there not only cause there is more than enough room but it will fill out the empty space. Also it will look different and better than the other two versions.
I started by changing the brightness and hue. Which let me make it darker and more moody like the previous posters this was a staple among all of the posters because of what apply in a horror poster. After editing the brightness I moved onto saturation and took some colour I took more out of this one because I really want the title to shine at the top and I think it will look great. Once it was looking moody enough I started by adding back the title and fitting correctly.
I fitted the trailer into the position I wanted and made the red just a tad darker I wanted it to be clear as possible and sometimes with these types of backgrounds its hard to make out what it is saying. But making it darker helped a lot and really added to the poster. When it came to adding the coming soon section I thought to myself well I already have two posters with that. I should experiment with something else. Horror movies do have slogans sometimes and I thought with the extra space this could look and be amazing for this poster. So using a simple font and starting writing some slogans such as. ''it does more than bleed'' , ''killing is just the start'' but for me personally there were not as fitting to the film as they could be so I landed on ''The night that kills'' this was a cheesy slogan but I like cheesy and it fits beautifully in this specific poster. I liked the white contrasting against the red which is something I am going to keep amongst all of the posters I do.
After that came the step of adding the logo this is something I want all of my posters to have if possible I like the idea that they all have a stamp of me owning and showing my logo off. With sizing it down came the idea that I do have room at the bottom for the film and I know with films they have websites to co inside with the film sometimes , depending on the film, but I thought I could create a fake website to not only enhance the poster that much more. But also give it more of a reason to be there. It would make sense to link a website for the film to show and learn what the film is about and more about it as a whole. Very happy that I came up with the idea to add a website for the film and coming up with a quick snappy slogan for this specific poster. Overall this poster feels a lot different to the last two and that's a good thing. It means it can stand out more and offer more variety for the film.
After coming up with two new ideas for the posters came the time to export this one as well I went with the PNG option because like the others it makes the image turn into the official poster I am after. I will put it into the folder like previous posters so I can access's them at a later date.
My process into creating poster 4 -
This was the final poster I edited I wanted at least 4 versions slightly or drastically different from each other and this one was going to be the most different yet. As you can see the image is landscape which is not a bad thing but in this case it is because I want posters to feel and stand proud not seem slanted and taken the wrong way. Normally I would leave it at that and work around the issue but I knew I could simply rotate the image and make this image feel more like the others whilst still being unique in the process.
This was a small task but important one I started off with going into the image tab at the top and clicking on the option image rotation which allowed me to flip and rotate the image as I see fit since the image was slanted I only needed to turn in 90 degrees clockwise which turned the image upright and allowed me to start the real editing process for the posters. I am glad I did this because without I think the poster would feel rushed and pointless.
The first thing I did was add the title just like the others I put it above the head because I think it looked great there and that allowed me to have room at the bottom which gives me the opportunity to add a slogan or more. I also made the red on this really bright and vibrant I liked he idea of bright and final titles like evil dead or barbarian
I think it works great for this poster because all of the poster is mainly light and not dark so having such a bright title dulls the colours naturally which is great because it means I don't have to adjust the colours as much as the other posters.
However that being said I still did spend some time on the editing of the whole poster in terms of colour grading and light. I started with turning down the brightness cause the mask is quite light and I want it too look more dark and rugged. Then onto hue and saturation I gently adjusted the gage to make the colours feel worn and and washed. It helped the poster not only stand out more but fit more into the horror category that I was wanting all along for the posters.
After that I thought since this would be my last poster I wanted to add something in this poster that the other posters don't have which is a date. Depending on the poster and person you can either have the date of when the poster was made or when the movie will officially release. For me personally I like the whole idea of connecting it with the movie so choosing the date to be when the movie releases was a no brainer and only felt fitting. As well as the date I chose is to release on Halloween day. I chose this for two reasons because its Halloween and what better time for a horror movie to release and that is also when the movie is set on Halloween so again it felt right and fitting. The font is simple nothing crazy the date doesn't need to be fancy only direct and offering information of when the movie releases.
As well as since it was my final poster I really wanted to make this exact poster feel unique and different from the rest. What better way to do that by adding billing. This is something in films to show who made the film, produced, designed and acted in the film and more Its a small detail in posters that could massively help make it feel professional and overall cleaner, With that I started typing out my positions and roles the weird part is when I downloaded the add on to photoshop I had to use lowercase to access the credits and use the caps lock keys to type who is in that specific position. This is something that I had to get use to but after a while it felt normal and I manged pretty well to type and make sure everything was spelled correctly.
I included credits such as director, producer, executive producer, costume designer, editor and set designer and handed these credits out to people who were dedicated to those who roles. I made sure as well every name had a capital letter and looked in sync with the whole billing. The billing is a massive part of the poster maybe the biggest so I wanted to be careful with this part. Once it was done I made sure to make it white and size where I think looked good and make sure that is was in the middle of the poster to keep in line with everything else. Symmetry helps the poster stand out more as well.
After that my poster was essentially done I made sure to double check any errors and see if anything was wrong. I did make some final adjustments and overall fixes. The first one was slightly darkening the hue a bit more I found that the hue really helps keep the colour and make it even. This is good because sometimes It can get really dull and look tampered with. The second fix was I added in my logo when doing my title and billing I forgot to add so made sure to add that into the poster, like before, in the bottom left corner. The final change/addition was to add the website like in my last poster I could have not put it in but overall I like the website link and it looks much better overall in this version than in the last one. It helps make the poster feel full of life and information whilst not going overboard or overdoing it. With this I am ready to finalize the poster.
The last step for this poster was to get a PNG version of it so I can be done with and ready to be evaluated. Overall I think this poster might be the best poster from them all it has information, colour and presence and I am really happy how it turned out.
Finished posters -
Final steps -
The final steps is to get a feedback google form sheet and see what version is the best and why. Knowing this can help me in the long run evaluate and choose a final poster to put into my final product tab and that will go alongside the trailer and film which will look good since its one cohesive unit.
Feedback -
Well the comments were massively positive about all the posters and how each one was differant enough and why they liked it. Alot of people agreed in the majority that the poster 4 is the best one I do agree as well it has the most stuff in the poster as well as not suffering from space and still looking really clean and official. I asked this survey to see what people think and should be the final poster for the final product and people seemed to like poster 2 as well. Which I do love but the majority favours poster 4 which is exactly what I wanted I knew that the poster was the best out of the bunch but I wanted to get peoples opinions and feedback on the poster as well as the others. With that being said my final poster will end up being poster 4 and will be in the final product blog post.
